3 days with lowland Gorillas

One of the most unique things about lowland Gorillas, also known as Eastern gorillas is that they live in plain areas unlike the mountain gorillas, which live in the thick, hidden highlands which makes them easier to track. This 3-day safari which starts and ends in Kigali Rwanda presents you with the opportunity to track the lowland gorillas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Kigali to head to Bukavu crossing via Cyangugu border. You can expect to get to Bukavu late in the evening.

Dinner and overnight as an accommodation of your choice.

Day 2: Lowland gorilla tracking and transfer to Nyungwe Forest.

Early morning on the second day you will set off to Kahuzi Biega National park reaching early for a briefing from the park warden. You will then set off for gorilla tracking. The Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) was gazetted in 1970 to conserve the Grauer’s gorilla, the world’s largest gorilla species. It remains the only place in the world where visitors can see these gorillas in the wild. The park covers an area of 6000 km 2 and protects a mountain forest in eastern DRC, which is the most densely populated region of the country. The park is named after the two spectacular extinct volcanoes which dominate its high altitude sector, Mont Kahuzi (3,308m) and Mont Biega (2,790m). Kahuzi Biega National Park is a Safe destination that is managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society.

After your tracking experience, we will return to Bukavu and cross over the border back to Rwanda and proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Dinner and overnight as an accommodation of your choice.

Day 3: Departure

Early morning after breakfast, you will go for an optional canopy walk, and later you will transfer to Kigali with an en-route visit to Murambi genocide memorial, Butare Museum, Nyanza Palace among others reaching the airport or your preferred drop-off point in the evening.
