Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Gisenyi
Meet your Native Expeditions guide at Kigali International Airport and drive to Gisenyi on the Rwandan shore of Lake Kivu.
Depending on arrival time, relax at your accommodation or take an optional local excursion. The guide will review border documents, equipment and the latest operating information before the planned crossing.
Overnight: Gisenyi
Day 2: Cross into DRC and Hike Mount Nyiragongo
After an early breakfast, transfer to the approved border crossing. Enter the DRC only if immigration, security and park permissions have been confirmed, then continue with the authorised local team to the designated trailhead.
Complete registration, equipment checks and a safety briefing before beginning the ascent. The steep hike commonly takes several hours, but timing depends on fitness, weather, trail conditions and instructions from the park team.
If the climb is authorised and conditions remain suitable, reach the summit shelter area for dinner and an overnight stay. Crater visibility and visible lava activity cannot be guaranteed.
Overnight: Authorised Nyiragongo summit shelters
Day 3: Descend and Return to Kigali
After breakfast, descend with the park team to the trailhead. Meet your driver and travel back through the approved border crossing into Rwanda.
Continue to Kigali for a hotel or airport drop-off. Allow generous time for border and road delays, and avoid a tight flight connection.
