Ultimate Primate Safari in Rwanda (6 days)
On this 6-day Ultimate Rwanda Primates Safari you will track Mountain Gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzees and other primates in Nyungwe Forest National Park, enjoy game drives and boat cruise in the Akagera National Park; and to visit some of Rwanda’s most historic and noteworthy sites for purposes of awareness and sensitization that you will be happy to share with your people back home.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest via Butare & Visit to Tea Plantation and Factory
Nyungwe Forest Rwanda
You will be met by a guide/driver in Kigali who will transfer you to Nyungwe Forest National Park. On the way, we will visit the Butare Museum, Murambi Memorial, and Nyanza Palace to learn about the history of Rwanda and its people.
You will check-in at the lodge in time for lunch and then, later in the afternoon, you will go for a tour of the Tea factory to see how the locally grown tea is processed to become one of the finest products Rwanda has for export.
Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge.
Day 2: Primate tracking & Forest walk
After an early breakfast, you will report to the Park Headquarters for a briefing on Chimpanzee tracking rules before setting out with guides to find the Chimpanzees.
Although you will be out for chimp trekking, expect to also come across other primates like the Golden monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, Angola colobus, Silver monkey, Hamlyn’s Monkey, Dent’s Mona Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, Grey-cheeked Mangabeys, and Olive Baboon among others. If you are into birds, expect to see various types of birds.
After your trekking experience, you will go for the famous Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk. The canopy walkway is suspended 50 meters in the air between big trees and stretches over a steep and deep valley across a massive forest cover offering spectacular views across this thick, misty forest.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
You will transfer to Volcanoes National Park after breakfast on the third day with lunch en-route. Expect to arrive in the late afternoon and check-in at the lodge/hotel of your choice to relax and unwind.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
The Gorilla tracking experience on day 4 begins with a briefing on the rules of Gorilla trekking before heading out for an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes, and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas. This can take up to 5 hours on especially on days when the Gorillas decide to move into thick hide-outs.
You will then return to your accommodation of choice for relaxation, dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park, Game drive & Boat ride
The drive to Akagera National Park is approximately 2½ hours and on the way you will visit Rusumo waterfall and Imigongo, the place of traditional handcraft makers.
You will then have lunch on arrival at your Lodge of choice and in the afternoon go for a game drive in the Akagera National Park and a boat ride on Ihema Lake.
Dinner and overnight at the accommodation of your choice.
Day 6: Game drive in Akagera & transfer to Kigali
After an early breakfast, you will embark on a morning game drive in Akagera National Park. During the morning game drives in the park, you will have a chance to see a number of early risers within the park that are usually seen in the savannah grasslands in the park for instance the zebras, impalas, topis, bushbucks, elephants, rhinos, giraffes among others plus a number of bird species like African fish Eagle, the open billed stork, the egrets, cormorants, Senegal lapwings, African darter, Hammerkop, Caruthers’s cisticola, pied crow, black-headed weaver, fan-tailed widow bird, violet’s black weaver, long-crested Eagle, like Rockefellers’s sunbird, Chapin’s flycatcher, Rwenzori Batis, strange weaver, red-throated alethe.
After the game drive, you will exit the park to head back to Kigali for drop-off at the airport or other location of preference.
